The short answer: yes, you can learn German through Hindi, and for many learners it's easier than through English. Hindi already has gendered nouns and puts the verb at the end of the sentence, and German does both. Start with the sounds, learn the most common words with their Hindi meanings and their article (der/die/das), listen every day with a Hindi translation under every line, and plan on roughly 3–4 months of daily study for A1.

Most German courses explain German in English. If you think in Hindi, that means every rule goes through two languages before it reaches you. This guide explains German from Hindi: what's already familiar, what's new, and a plan to reach A1.

Why Hindi speakers have a head start

Two things that confuse English speakers feel natural to Hindi speakers:

1. Nouns have a gender. In Hindi, every noun is masculine (पुल्लिंग) or feminine (स्त्रीलिंग), and the verb changes with it: लड़का जाता है, लड़की जाती है. German has three genders: der (masculine), die (feminine) and das (neuter). So you already know the idea; you just need a third box.

Don't copy the Hindi gender, though: they often don't match.

German Hindi German gender Hindi gender
die Sonne सूरज (sun) feminine masculine
der Mond चाँद (moon) masculine masculine
das Mädchen लड़की (girl) neuter feminine

Learn every German noun with its article, as one unit: not "Sonne", but "die Sonne".

2. The verb goes to the end. Hindi says मैंने किताब पढ़ी, with the verb last. German does this too, more than English does:

  • Ich habe das Buch gelesen. (मैंने किताब पढ़ी है।) The main verb goes to the end.
  • …weil ich müde bin. (…क्योंकि मैं थका हुआ हूँ।) After weil (क्योंकि), the verb goes to the end.

der, die, das in Hindi

Three tips that work:

  1. Learn the article with the noun. der Tisch (मेज़), die Tür (दरवाज़ा), das Fenster (खिड़की), always together.
  2. Use the patterns. Words ending in -ung, -heit and -keit are die (die Zeitung, अख़बार). Words ending in -chen are das (das Mädchen).
  3. Sing it. A gender you heard in a song comes back faster than one you read in a list. See Der, Die, Das: German articles with songs.

Listen with a Hindi translation under every line

The fastest way to build an ear is German you can almost follow, with the meaning right under it. Here is a line from the A2 song Rauch im Licht, as Soma shows it with Hindi selected:

Ich steh im Rauch, doch mein Kopf bleibt klar
मैं धुएँ में खड़ा हूँ, पर मेरा दिमाग साफ़ है

doch here means "but still" (पर फिर भी), one of the most useful little words in German.

A plan for A1 in 3–4 months

About an hour a day. It's an estimate: more hours means faster.

  • Weeks 1–2: sounds and survival. Pronunciation, numbers, greetings, ich bin / ich habe. Listen to one song a day with the translation.
  • Weeks 3–6: present tense and articles. Regular and irregular verbs, der/die/das, ein / eine, questions. 10 new words a day into spaced repetition.
  • Weeks 7–10: everyday situations. Shopping, the doctor, directions, appointments, the A1 topics. Short dialogues: listen, then speak one part aloud.
  • Weeks 11–14: exam practice. Practice papers for all four parts, plus speaking with a partner or a teacher.

Goethe A1 tips

The Goethe-Zertifikat A1 (Start Deutsch 1) has four parts: Hören (listening), Lesen (reading), Schreiben (writing) and Sprechen (speaking).

  • Hören is the part many learners find hardest. Daily listening helps more than extra grammar.
  • Sprechen: practise introducing yourself (name, age, country, city, languages, job, hobbies) until it's automatic.
  • Schreiben: learn the format of a short message (greeting, three points, closing).
  • Do at least two full practice papers under exam timing.
